1. Development and use of Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram 2. Evidence of the impact of pain on performance

1. Development and use of Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram In this session, Dr. Sue Dyson will introduce the Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram (RHPE) – a scientifically developed tool to help identify signs of pain in ridden horses. The presentation will cover how the checklist was created, validated, and how it can be applied in practice to improve horse welfare and rider awareness. 2. Evidence of the impact of pain on performance This session will present evidence showing how pain negatively affects performance in ridden horses. Dr. Sue Dyson will discuss real-life examples and research findings that highlight the importance of recognising pain-related behaviours to optimise equine performance and partnership. 1. Can all behavioural problems be blamed on EGUS? 2. EGUS prevention: Beyond free choice hay an no carbs

1. Can all behavioural problems be blamed on EGUS? 2. EGUS prevention: Beyond free choice hay and no carbs. Not all behavioural problems stem from Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS), yet it remains a common and often misunderstood contributor to poor performance, sensitivity, and unpredictability under saddle. This lecture explores when it is appropriate to consider EGUS as a factor, how to differentiate it from other issues, and why simply offering free-choice hay and removing starch may not be enough. Prevention and management strategies grounded in evidence and equine-specific needs will be discussed to support both behavioural wellbeing and optimal performance.
