In this lesson, we cover the fundamentals of bit fitting and how to assess whether a bit is suitable for your horse.
We will discuss different types of bits and materials, and explain how they influence pressure in the horse’s mouth.
You will also receive practical tips on how to evaluate bit fit, recognize potential issues, and check your horse’s oral health.
This training will give you a better understanding of how to make informed choices that support your horse’s welfare and improve cooperation between horse and rider.

After the lecture you understand better the key principles behind effective, horse-friendly bit fitting and what influences comfort and performance.

Trainer: Janina Kulmala is a bit fitting specialist. During the past five years, she has fitted bits for horses across all disciplines, including those competing at Olympic and World Championship level. She has over 25 years of experience working with horses. She is a former active show jumper, and her strong competitive background supports a deep understanding of equine welfare and performance.

Janina has completed extensive education in equine anatomy, pathology, and rehabilitation (PRO HEVTN, 300 hours). She is a certified horse wellbeing coach and is qualified to carry out advisory work on equine health, including conducting health checks and helping owners identify the underlying causes of health issues.

She has further developed her expertise under internationally recognized specialists such as Gillian Higgins and is also a certified sports massage therapist. In addition, she provides laser therapy for animals and works closely with veterinarians, including sports-focused clinics such as Becvet in Estonia.

Her daily work focuses on bit fitting and evaluating equine oral health, combining science-based knowledge with practical experience. Janina takes a holistic approach to both horse and rider, helping to find effective solutions even in more complex cases.
